Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation
Oral LASER applications
With the use of LASER applications dental services incorporate the most recent technological developments in various fields in Dental Medicine.
The application of laser in dentistry enables a range of treatments to be implemented, which most likely would not have been able to without this technology.
With the use of a LASER, the sound of the dental drill, the painful injections and the discomfort of the patient, are a thing of the past. LASER treatment could actually make the visit to the dentist more enjoyable.
Treatment of tooth decay, soft tissue surgery, root disinfection, gum hypersensitivity, dental conditions, and facial cosmetic treatments can occur in significantly less time, with less bleedings, faster rehabilitation and with less infections.
How much do we actually know about LASERs?
Most of us, mostly from the film industry or even from what we have heard from TV ads, are more likely to treat the term skeptically or even with fear.
The term L.A.S.E.R. originated as an acronym for “light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation”. In other words, each laser is a monochromatic amplified light, in specific wave length, and indeed, all lasers belong to the visible spectrum and mainly to the infrared (long-wave length) not to harmful radiation. A laser is a device that emits light through a process of optical amplification based on the stimulated emission of electromagnetic radiation. That is, laser is a device that when operated by experienced personnel is completely harmless and absolutely patient friendly, since it is just a light!
There are many applications of laser in dentistry and can be implemented with various types of laser. In our dental practice we use two of the main representatives of laser: Er:YAG Laser for harder tissues and Nd:YAG Laser for softer tissues and sterilisation.
The Er: YAG Laser with 2940nm light wavelength has the capacity to be absorbed, to a great extent, by water, and it owes its cutting attributes to this absorption because the hard tissues we are interested in, such as caries , enamel, dentin, tartar, bone or even soft tissues, contain water. Let’s not forget that the cell wall of the microbes also contains water. That means, wherever the Laser is applied, there is complete sterilization.
The Laser is completely painless or almost totally painless. Therefore, with the use of such a Laser, the discomfort of the dental drill, and the use of anesthesia tend toward extinction!
Another application of Er: YAG Laser is used in Periodontology. The Laser gives spectacular results in the surgical treatment of periodontitis or implants, without the need of any surgical instruments. Apart from sub-wound tartar removal, there is instant sterilization of the pocket, fact that no other conventional treatment can offer. In conjunction with a soft tissue Laser such as the Nd:YAG Laser, which we will examine below, there is a spectacular and immediate improvement of the clinical picture.
The wavelength of Nd: YAG Laser is 1064nm. It is of a lower water absorption index and a greater absorption depth of about 3-4mm (depending on the tissue). These properties make it an excellent, fast cutting tool for soft tissues. In addition, due to the deep absorption depth it offers complete sterilization and actually to a great deal of depth. It can be excellently used in soft tissue surgery, cosmetic surgery, lesion removal and more. One of its most impressive applications is in the treatment against herpes. With the use of the Laser, it only takes a few seconds for these flaws to become a thing of the past. Without any need of anesthetic, just few pulses from the Laser are sufficient enough and the herpes is treated, the symptoms immediately disappear and after one or two days there is not even a scar.
Another great application of Nd: YAG Laser is the elimination of microbes and bacteria.
As we have already mentioned, wherever the laser bean is applied there is instant sterilization. The bean also acts in great depth and can be applied for the treatment of Periodontitis and Peristefanitis, aiding towards the quickest recovery of the follicles and provides sterilization.
Laser contribution to root canal treatments is important. One of the most difficult problems a dentist has to face is to eliminate all existence of microbes in the root canal and underneath it. This is where the laser comes to offer solution since it is able of deeper penetration, offers a complete sterilization to this not so easily accessible area. The root canal treatment can be complete in just one appointment.
And that’s not all. The specific type of laser used in our dental surgery is upgraded enabling us to perform facial cosmetic procedures such as hair removal and upper lip wrinkle smoothing.
The laser is the most advanced and friendlier approach that exists today for any dental patient. It eliminates our fears for the dental drill, the pain or even for the anesthetic. It even eliminates the discomforting sound of the drill, it is harmless and completely safe when used by experienced personnel.
